In my advertising class this morning we were doing our show and tell for our ads that we found. One girl got up and showed her Nike ad about how being fit and muscular is beautiful and not to be ashamed of it. I thought it was a great ad and could relate to it at least at one point in my life, back when I did sports. But then we got into a class discussion about it and how society portrays women and how some companies are trying to portray the "your body is beautiful no matter what" image now. My teacher (whom I respect, look up to, and think is an awesome professor) completely surprised me by saying something to the effect that all size 0 girls are either anorexic or are that small by some drastic measures. That really hit me hard. And was slightly offensive.
Although my recent pair of shorts that I just purchased are a size 2, they are still big on me in the waist. I mainly bought them in that size for the length. I'm not a huge fan of booty shorts. But I'm sure I could have fit into the 0 as well. But back in March, when my mother and I were shopping for some dress clothes for me to wear to interviews, at Express I had to get a 00 for the pants to fit me right. And they fit. Now, if you looked through my pants drawer and looked at the sizes they range from 00-4 and 24-25 (European sizes). This is depending on brand and year of purchase. Since all of us women know, every brand is different and the sizes vary pretty much year to year depending on how society views women and how they change. If women are getting larger, the sizes get bigger but the number stays the same. Just as, if women are getting smaller, the numbers stay the same but the sizes of those numbers change. But back to my point.
I can technically be called a size 0. I have proof that I fit into 0's. However, I am not anorexic, bulimic, I love to eat, I eat a lot of junk food when you compare it to the amount of healthy food I eat, I don't exercise anymore (even though I weighed more when I was doing sports), and I eat like 5 times a day. So who is she to say that all size 0's are that way due to anorexia or other drastic measures? I will admit that for my height and build I'm just a little under normal weight. And also, I understand that most models are a good 3-7 inches taller than me so their "normal" should technically be a bit higher than mine. But still my point is. Not all size 0 people have eating disorders.
It seriously offends me when people make comments about me being too skinny as if it's a bad thing. Like when people say "oh, you're so skinny" in a condescending tone. Or when people flat out ask me if I have an eating disorder (yes, it's happened). Why can't people realize that not all skinny people have eating disorders? And you know what, if you have ever been called fat in an offensive way, that's how I feel when people say I'm too skinny. It hurts. So the next time you start to judge someone based on how they look, don't. And if you don't, watch what you say at least.
End of rant.
